Tanzania’s Rice Price Was Frozen in December 2023. Here’s What the Last Three Years Actually Looked Like.

Until this update, Rice.tz’s price series stopped in December 2023 — not because the market went quiet, but because the series simply wasn’t refreshed. A free, validated monthly data feed closes that gap entirely, back to August 2026.
What the price actually did
Using WFP’s Tanzania food-price monitoring data (cross-validated against USDA’s own published figures to within 1.8% over 35 overlapping months), the national monthly average wholesale rice price fell through most of 2024, bottoming around 1,953 TZS/kg in September 2024, before recovering steadily through 2025 and peaking near 2,609 TZS/kg in March 2026. By August 2026 it had eased back to roughly 2,322 TZS/kg. None of that multi-year cycle was visible while the series sat frozen at its December 2023 figure.
The import-dependence story the data actually tells
Our own prior import figure covered calendar-year 2023 only — and 2023 turns out to be an unusual year, not the norm. FAOSTAT’s trade data shows Tanzania was a net rice exporter in every other year from 2019 to 2024: in 2021, exports outweighed imports by more than 12,000 to 1. The 2023 import spike (close to 139,000 tonnes) was real, but publishing it alone, without that context, would suggest the opposite of Tanzania’s underlying structural position.
A genuine, unresolved contradiction
Tanzania’s Ministry of Agriculture states the country is 103-112% rice self-sufficient (2023/24). USDA’s own forecasting, on a different basis, projects rising import dependence — an estimated 650,000 tonnes of imports for the 2026/27 marketing year. These are not simply two ways of saying the same thing: they use different accounting bases (self-sufficiency ratio vs. milled-supply-against-consumption modelling), and we show both, labeled, rather than picking one.
